The Best Time To Visit Austria

The best time to visit Austria

When most people think of Austria, they think of rolling hills, skiing, Christmas markets, and The Sound of Music. And while the country does have all of this, it also has so much more!

In order to get the most of your trip to Austria, you need decide what the best time to visit for you and and what you’re looking to do. The weather in Austria is seasonal so that can be a factor.

Here are the best times to travel to Austria!

April to May

The winter months are disappearing and the days are getting longer. Temperatures can still be a bit unpredictable in the spring months. Hiking enthusiasts will still find that it gets a bit cold if overcast and the lake temperatures are still chilly. Because it is still unpredictable weather, fewer crowds visit this time of year meaning lower prices and more accommodation options.

This is a wonderful time to explore Salzburg, an area that is the embodiment of Austrian culture. We thought Salzburg was very beautiful.  You can spend your time just wandering through the old town which has square after square with fountains and interesting architecture.Spring is also a great time to visit Vienna, a city that is usually bustling with people.

June to August

In June there is the Midsummer Night Celebration, an event held all over the country, with bonfires and folkloric events. In Salzburg in July, there are many festivities including Salzburg Festival – a festival of music and drama.

June to August is also a great time to visit if you love all things outdoors. For unforgettable views, visit Zell am See, a city that features a sapphire-colored lake surrounded by glaciers. Into your hiking? Take a trip to Hohe Tauern National Park where you can go trekking under the summer sun. Or head to Reutte for a suspension bridge to remember!

Summer is high season meaning crowds and prices will double. With summer comes the heat, especially near the lakes, so to take a dip.

September to October

Fall in Austria is truly breathtaking. The trees that sit on the rolling hills become painted in red and gold hues as the temperatures begin to drop. Fall is a great time to visit as its out of peak season and September or October means fewer tourists and lower prices. You can also get great weather (between 57-71 degrees or 14°c – 22°c).

September is one of the best times to experience Austria’s wine culture, one of the best in Europe. In fact, Vienna has outstanding vineyards and you can taste local wines with traditional Austrian cuisine.

October has a number of events in Vienna including Viennale, the film festival, Vienna Fashion Week, and Long Night of Museums, where museums extend their operating hours.

November to March

Winter usually signifies low season in many European countries, Austria’s winter months are quite unique. Crowds are lower than in the summer, yet many still come to experience the snowfall and Christmas markets.

November and December means… Christmas markets!! This is reason enough to visit!

If you want to ski in Austria, now is the perfect time. The village of St. Anton has become the skiing capital of the country.
